The first ever Cretan restaurant outside Greece's pristine shores, 1905.London is one of a kind not only in Fitzrovia but in the whole capital.
They're not ones to leave their heritage by the wayside. Indeed, Greece's south Mediterranean charm can be sensed from all corners of this establishment. Whitewashed walls paired with light wood furniture and crisp white napkins create a relaxed vibe, that is still upmarket and glamorous. Furthermore, it's incredibly intimate, making for an elegant date spot that gives you plenty of space to enjoy one another's company.
Proud yet rebellious, 1905's menu reflects the Cretan spirit, focussing on simple ingredients prepared to perfection. You might not have heard of many of their dishes, but you are encouraged to be bold and sample delicacies like whole snails sauteed in salt and vinegar, Greek fish roe with anchovies and tomato confit and authentic boureki which wraps creamy courgettes and potatoes in a flaky filo pastry.
As for mains, the Cretan adventure continues with a slow-cooked chestnut stifado which always chases away those rainy-day blues, a Cretan pasta with a red game sauce or the Gamopilafo, a creamy pilaf rice and lamb dish that is traditionally served at weddings. As for really great cuts of meat, lamb enters the spotlight with a slow-cooked shoulder and a simple herbed dish served with potatoes. You couldn't get more authentic, really. And when you consider their 200+ range of organic and biodynamic wines, 1905 is a vision of Cretan excellence to be shared with the world.
