A contemporary Indian eatery in central Harborne, Umami has garnered its faultless reputation through years of excellent service and outstanding cooking.

Stylish and cosmopolitan, Umami whisks diners off to a warmer destination with its colour palette of rich terracottas, warm browns and beachy whites. You can almost feel the vacation rush when you enter as you gaze at the tropical plants occupying discreet corners and happy groups relaxing in mustard-yellow booths. A place of vibrancy and sumptuousness, Umami is giving Indian dining a whole new look and feel.

Another reason for Umami's success might be its extensive menu that covers every base. Up first, you are invited to indulge in street food favourites. You have the luxury of eating the likes of masala paneer pakoras, samosa chaat, jackfruit Manchurians and aloo tikka chaat at your leisure. From the coast come some Cornish mussels that have taken on a whole new personality with a coconut sauce and turmeric, jumbo prawns cooked with lemon and mustard, and a soft shell crab fritter which is a heavenly morsel once dipped in some garlic mayo.

The mains tour the everyday family kitchen, as well as the royal kitchen, but they share one common theme; they use premium British ingredients. With Shropshire Alderton Farm lamb chops they've created a royal favourite, with daily white fish they've reimagined the Assamese fish curry and with St Austell seabass comes a Bengali fish dish with plenty of lime and fresh herbs. Armed with a whole range of vegetarian dishes, Eastern Indian and British Indian dishes too, there's a new Indian dish just waiting to be discovered. But if you stick with a familiar beef vindaloo, that's also fine too!
